The project aims the rehabilitation of the old Sant Sadurni d’Anoia’s modernist schools, in order to host a cultural center with library and archive. The historic building develops in the form of an U, a frequent school typology of the early twentieth century, around a courtyard.
Taller 9s arquitectes decided to respect the façade and the historic building as it was conceived, taking advantage of the original access from the square as the main entrance of the new equipment.
A second new body is placed next to the rear façade. The position of the two bodies allows to mantain the central courtyard as the articulating space of the complex, a protected space that will allow controlled activities to be held in the open air.
The library occupies the two upper floors and integrates a series of spaces (a multi-purpose room, the courtyard, study-support rooms, etc.).
The refurbishment bets on traditional construction systems (ventilated Catalan roof, breathable stucco façade, Catalan vault slabs…), extending the life cycle of the existing solutions and materials, taking advantage of their features and completing them to respond to the new use and to safety features and energy efficiency.
The new bodies are conceived with pre-industrialised systems with the same objective of minimising the energy and environmental impact of the intervention. Green roofs, metal panels and our own rubber floorings, namely 500 sqm of Granito G431.

“Urban living room” is how Architect Lambert Lenack chooses to introduce this public library refurbishment in Rambouillet. “The transformation of the Florian library brought a total reorganization of the space”.
“The media library is completely freed from the old conception of physical storage of books and becomes an open, friendly and domestic space: that is why we call it the urban living room”.
The atmosphere is relaxed, with white walls and made-to-measure natural wood furniture. Our own Nd/Uni U21 flooring (for a total surface of 1334 sqm) provides a stark chromatic contrast, all the while ensuring comfort and reduction of the noise due to treading.
How do you approach the redesign of a Library that goes back to the XVI century? How do you listen to the stories told by more than 5 millions volumes?
For Katja Hogenboom, one of the architects working on renovation of the Leiden University Library, the answer is quite clear. “People like to go to this new library to read and meet, now that the streets of the city are taken over by shopping and commuting. Public buildings such as this can provide information and enlightenment when they become the new public sphere of the city”.
For the redesign of the 1st floor study area we provided our exclusive Kayar flooring with coconut fibers, designed by Sottsass Associati.
A library like a modern-day agorà, a place of meeting, studying, sharing. Perfectly attuned to the modern age, with one million e-books on its virtual shelves, the Library focuses its mission mainly towers the students of Leiden University, though others can profit from its services.

Our own Kayar flooring has been chosen by Andrea Branzi for his new exhibition “The Multicultural Metropolis” that can be visited in Milano’s Triennale.
The exhibition enrolls through of a series of simple wooden “benches” where mass-consumerism products (a constant in Branzi’s line of thought since the ‘60s) sit alongside portraits of people of different ethnicities.
The benches look unrefined and playful, conjuring the image of a local artisan in India or South America who gave in to his inner child with some scraps he had laying around. The photos have a “family portrait” feel to them, like they were taken out of the house to have some new, unexpected guests have a look at them.
The Exhibition focuses on the themes of globalization and identity, using the sharp contrast between mass products and fragile personal memories as a tool to tell stories on the verge of vanishing.

Bergen-born composer Edvard Grieg wrote his most famous opus, the music for Henrik Ibens’s Peer Gynt, in 1875. Its best-known theme “In The Hall of the Mountain King” was to make its way in popular culture, mainly thanks to Fritz Lang’s movie “M”, like few other pieces of classical music ever.
The story of Grieg’s own “Hall”, namely the concert hall in the heart of Bergen that takes his name, is similarly epic: early talks go back to 1894, after Grieg himself had directed for two years the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, but the project met almost everything on its way: from lack of a suitable location to the Bergen Fire of 1916 to WWII to lack of funds.
On May 12, 1978, the 1500-seats Grieghallen, designed by Danish architect Knud Munk, was officially opened with a performance of Grieg’s Norwegian Dances.
We are very proud to have contributed our flooring to such an amazing legacy: namely, 600 sqm of our unicolor Nd/Uni and 1200 sqm of our studded BS Classic made in a custom color.

“Une médiathèque n’a donc pas la rigueur d’une simple bibliothèque. Son apparence est plus ouverte et peut exprimer une image plus spectaculaire. En d’autres termes, ce bâtiment peut et doit donner envie”.
In the words of designers Karine Herman & Jérôme Sigwalt of K-architects, L’Echo is more than your typical neighborhood “mediateque”, combining a strong sense of mission and commitment to knowledge with a contemporary approach to sharing and “consuming” culture.
An iconic presence (thanks to its “rosso Ferrari” facade) in the commune of Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, just south of Paris, it is a place that invites curiosity, discovery and exploration, while at the same time retaining an “easy” style, allowing all visitors, young and grown-ups, to relax, sit back and just feel free to browse through books, magazines, music and movies.
Compliant to its mission, the mediateque proposes a full and varied calendar of events, recommendations, activities and reviews, establishing itself as a beacon of “good” culture for the people of the commune: vibrant, alive, friendly.
There may be a lot of walls to tear down when it comes to ensuring the fruition and the enjoinment of culture in nowadays world: the reclusive, self-referential notion of serious culture allegedly opposed to popular (or pop) culture has to go, and this project in Paris, where we supplied our classic solid-colour Nd/Uni, is certainly a very good start.

After a long tour touching the cutting edge cities of New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong, Zaha Hadid’s mobile art pavilion has found its permanent home outside the “Institute du Monde Arabe” in Paris. The pavilion, commissioned by Chanel head designer Karl Lagerfeld, initially hosted an exhibition of artworks inspired by Chanel bags by 20 artists and called Mobile Art. Subsequently donated by Chanel to the IMA institute it is going to be used to promote cultural programs and to host several exhibitions and happenings promoting the best talents from the Arab countries. The pavilion is a perfect marriage between of the iconic smooth flow of lines marking Zaha Hadid’s style and Chanel’s typical elegance. Thanks to the new digital modelling tools the unit becomes a living sculpture far away from the typical idea of “building”. Its form looks like is always turning into something different. Every step you make around pavilion, it changes its form naturally and sensually, in stark but pleasant contrast with the rigid order and repetition of the nearby Jean Nouvel’s IMA building. This richness of forms and spaces finds a mirror in the interior of the structure, where the need of multifunctional versatility had been developed with a series of arch shaped elements well underlined by artificial lighting softly laying on the walls. The exterior is connected to the interior also by a large opening in the roof letting the sun light flood the black and white interiors and illuminate the large central courtyard that can be a meeting point for visitor during an exhibition as well as hosting events by itself.

Established in 1970 as a direct successor to the 700 years old University of Paris, the faculty of Panthéon-Assas University has produced so far two Presidents, four Prime Ministers and a large number of jurists and politicians. The Library of the Faculty, located in Rue d’Assas, retains all the features of such an illustrious place of knowledge: silence, focus, solemnity, and yet a sense of community, a feeling of collective experience. It’s a place open 67 hours every week, where people can meet, browse through the 15000 books on loan, study, socialize and feel integral part of a past that reverberates into the present. In a project of this scope, striking aesthetics must go hand in hand with the other “musts” of contemporary architecture: ecology, recyclability, proven commitment to a sustainable building approach.
