THE INVISIBLE IMPORTANCE
OF THE B-SIDE
THAT IS: ECODESIGN IS THE FUTURE, EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T SEE IT.
As the Little Prince said, “What is essential is invisible to the eye,” and this is also partly true for our rubber flooring.
When professionals consider Artigo rubber flooring, they usually focus on its endless aesthetic possibilities and exceptional comfort performance. But today we want to talk about what few look at: the underside of our flooring. Because it is here that we can discover the enormous progress made by Artigo in the field of sustainability and ecodesign.
To better understand, we must first explain the distinction between homogeneous and heterogeneous flooring, i.e., with two layers.
Many companies produce homogeneous rubber flooring, which in practice consists of a single layer of material, identical throughout its thickness.
Artigo, however, has for many years chosen the path of two heterogeneous layers: the upper layer ensures durability and aesthetic variety, while the lower layer provides cushioning and acoustic insulation.
The EN 1817 and EN 12199 standards make no distinction between homogeneous and heterogeneous rubber flooring: the important thing is that the wear layer is at least 1 mm.
Ours are the only rubber floors with this type of construction, and this uniqueness has allowed us to give new life to recycled materials, which are incorporated into the lower layer and do not affect the aesthetics of the upper layer.
This technical feature ensures significant improvements in terms of sustainability and has allowed our Gaia products to open a new era for rubber flooring.
With homogeneous technology, it is not possible to apply a circular design approach. Circularity is a closed path. Instead, two-layer flooring allows for every kind of circular approach and innovation.
Why did we opt for heterogeneous flooring?
The heterogeneity of our products ensures maximum design freedom:
· from a technical and economic point of view, guaranteeing the best performance without excessive price increases
· from a sustainability point of view, opening up endless possibilities such as product circularity, which are precluded to a homogeneous product.
We are proud of our background, but we can say that we are equally proud of our “B-side,” so much so that we want to share it as much as possible, even if the end user will never see it.
