Completed in 2024 and opening its doors to students in September of the same year, the Groupe Scolaire Rosa Bonheur in Aucamville stands as a benchmark for sustainable public architecture. Designed by the visionary firm 360° Architecture, the complex synthesizes high-performance engineering with a child-centric vernacular, prioritizing both environmental stewardship and the well-being of its young occupants. The project is distinguished by its rigorous commitment to low-carbon construction, utilizing a palette of locally sourced, bio-based materials that satisfy demanding environmental certifications.
The primary structure is engineered using “Bois des Pyrénées” (Pyrenean wood). By utilizing certified regional timber, the design minimizes embodied carbon while providing a warm, tactile interior environment.
In a sophisticated marriage of ancient technique and modern physics, the interior walls incorporate raw clay bricks sourced from the Albine brickworks. These elements serve a dual purpose: providing significant thermal inertia to regulate indoor temperatures and naturally enhancing the acoustic profile of the learning spaces.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the complex is its roof. Clad in NedZink NEO standing seam zinc, the roof cascades in a series of distinctive curves. This “village of little houses” aesthetic is more than a stylistic choice; it evokes a sense of domesticity and security—a “cocoon” for early childhood development.
By integrating geothermal technology with raw clay thermal mass, the Rosa Bonheur school complex serves as a blueprint for the future of educational facilities—where the architecture itself becomes a silent educator in sustainability.
