Olympic Rubber Flooring

Over 40 years ago, French architect Roger Taillibert was chosen to design the primary venue for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, Québec, Canada. Today, the iconic facility is home to the Institut National du Sport du Québec (INS) and serves as a multisport training, scientific and medical facility for National Olympic and Paralympic high-performance athletes from across Canada. INS Québec has gradually expanded its capacity in time and today is a central point for the entire province of Quebec, offering services to 44 different sports. “We ran work sessions and focus groups with coaches, athletes – for both Olympic and Paralympic focuses – scientists and medical staff. We wanted to know what they had seen around the world and asked what we could do to provide athletes with a world-class environment. We built the structure directly in the stadium, and we are creating a center of excellence to provide integrated support to athletes at the highest level” says INS Québec CEO Marc Gélinas. After all the research, construction for the INS Quebec began in January 2013 and by opening day in September 2014 the project was on track, on time and on budget.  An innovative flooring concept designed by Sottsass Associati with a minimal but organic look, coconut fibers within rubber. A strong red was installed in the locker rooms, a stylish greige in the Administration and the internal Clinic while a solid bright green U107 of our Uni is covering the stairs. Walking comfort and excellent impact sound reduction properties came along with the choice and were certainly welcome.Kayar meets the requirements of the German protocol AgBB, the Blue Angel, and the GREENGUARD Gold Certification which includes safety factors to account for sensitive individuals and, in addition to limiting emissions of over 360 VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds),requires to comply with California Section 01350 ensuring maximum safety for users of the premises in which it is installed. Both Kayar and Uni are Artigo products with certified EPDs. EPDs are important to encourage the use of products and materials for which life-cycle information is available and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable life-cycle impacts.
