SCIENCE BASED TARGETS VALIDATION
WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS
As professionals, we are all constantly inundated with statements of environmental “goodism”: it is a trend that now pervades all institutional sites, and it is not at all easy to discriminate substance from generic and even … sly statements.
So, how to distinguish those who are really committed and those who are riding the trend with generic phrases and a few photos? A very good way is to get confirmation from third-party entities on the true goodness of the action plan being pursued.
A good place to start
The SBTi VALIDATION (Science-Based Goals Initiative), which we as Artigo obtained in 2025, is a good place to start.
The initiative is promoted by international organizations such as the UN Global Compact, WWF, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and the World Resources Institute (WRI), and is considered a global standard for setting emission reduction strategies.
What it the SBTi Validation?
The SBTi VALIDATION is an award given to companies that are committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in a manner consistent with the latest scientific climate research. The goal is to limit global warming to 1.5°C below pre-industrial levels, in line with the Paris Agreement.
How Does SBTi Validation Work?
- Target Setting: The company identifies an emissions reduction plan based on scientific methodologies and submits it to SBTi.
- Validation: SBTi verifies that the targets are consistent with the decarbonization path needed to combat climate change.
- Implementation and Monitoring: The company implements concrete measures and periodically updates its progress.

Why is SBTi Validation Important?
✅ It demonstrates a concrete and measurable commitment to sustainability. No more generic “green” statements !
✅ It Improves corporate reputation and attractiveness to investors.
✅ it helps the company comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
Companies that achieve SBTi certification stand out in the marketplace and help build a low-carbon future.
To date, about 6,000 Companies worldwide have obtained Validation of their emission reduction plans with SBTi and another 3,000 have applied to receive it.
